Bound by blood.
Tempted by desire.
Unleashed by destiny.

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose—to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion—one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.

With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom—and the power of love.”

Oooooh boy I have a lot to say. So, buckle up and hold on tight because there is a thought bomb coming at ya.

Here’s the thing, I really liked this book. BUT I also had a lot of issues with it. Let’s start there.

Issue #1: This is an ADULT fantasy and yet Bryce, who is in her 20’s, acted like a spoiled brat of a teenager. She drank and did drugs like no one’s business. She swears ALL THE FRIGGIN TIME. Y’all the f-bomb is on every page. Swearing doesn’t usually bother me, but GIRL GET ANOTHER WORD. So annoying. Bryce was freaking annoying. Get over yourself, Bryce.

Issue #2: This one is a double sided coin. The Plot. It was predictable. It was VERY SJM which is hard because I at once loved it and was like oh, it’s the same plot line as the other of her books.

Issue #3: Usually SJM handles depression/ mental illness pretty well… Bryce just totally ignored hers and didn’t get the help she needed.

Whew, still with me? Let’s talk nicely now because I did, in fact, really enjoy this book.

Here’s what I loved:

Loved #1: The Plot. See? Told you it was double sided. It was intense with A LOT of elements to keep me entertained. There were deaths, destruction, and mysterious characters and plot lines.

Loved #2: RUHN. Oh my gosh I loved him. He was way more responsible than Bryce and tried to be the best brother ever. He is adorable. And I love his POV and the romance plot line SJM is clearly setting him up fore.

Loved #3: The Romance. Hunt and Bryce fit each other perfectly! They had great chemistry and were both messed up but helped each other rather than bring each other down.

Loved #4: The World. Oh my gosh! It was SO cool to see a “modern” world mixed with magic, witches, fae, werewolves, mer people (Tharion!! More of him please!), angles, demons, shifters, and more (like cute little messenger otters)! It was perfect and made for lots of story telling!

Loved #5: The Writing. SJM does have really good writing, just like, stop using the f-bomb. We get it. It’s an adult fantasy. Congrats, you can use the word, now STOP.

See? I had way more loves than issues! It was a behemoth book so I just had a lot to say.

Let discuss! If you have read it, what did you think?!

Lord of the Fading Lands (Tairen Soul, #1) by C. L. Wilson – Spoiler Free Review

Publisher: Harper Collins

Publication Date: October 2, 2007

Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Fae, Magic

Adventure Rating: 4.5

Amazon

Once he drove back the darkness.
Once he loved with such passion his name was legend.

Once, driven wild with grief over the murder of his beloved, the majestic Fey King Rain Tairen Soul had laid waste to the world before vanishing into the Fading Lands. Now, a thousand years later, a new threat draws him back into the world—and a new love reawakens the heart he thought long dead.

Ellysetta, a woodcarver’s daughter, calls to Rain in a way no other ever had. Mysterious and magical, her soul beckons him with a compelling, seductive song—and no matter the cost, the wildness in his blood will not be denied.

As an ancient, familiar evil regains its strength, causing centuries-old alliances to crumble and threatening doom for Rain and his people… he must claim his truemate to embrace the destiny woven for them both in the mists of time.”

First of all, this cover… not my fave. Secondly this book was so cheesy I LOVED it. It was cheese in the good way. I have been really into Adult Fantasy Romance lately and this hit the spot! I don’t know why, but I feel like this would make a good Anime? Weird. I know.

I loved Ellysetta. I thought she was a strong female lead that kept Rain in check. She has power that she doesn’t understand and that I’m interested to know more about (as well as the other characters)! Rain. Oh gosh. He was ALPHA male, man. I mean, I guess he has to be to be the King of the Fae. But that man needed a women strong enough to go head to head with him. I think he met his match. It is pretty cool that he turns into a flying cat that can breath fire.

There is actually a really strong, intriguing plot other than them being mates. There is a lot of political intrigue and a deathly plot waiting to be sprung. I have so much anxiety over how this book ended. I need to know more! There are some really cool fight scenes/ magic scenes. Bel is my favorite character I think!

Below, is the photo I took for this series. I read it on my kindle. I could have photoshopped the cover in buuuut again, that cover…

The Blinding Knife (Lightbringer, #2) Review [Spoiler Free]

Author: Brent Weeks

Publisher: Orbit

Publication Date: September 11, 2012

Genre: Adult Fantasy

My Rating: 4 Stars

“Gavin Guile is dying.

He’d thought he had five years left—now he has less than one. With fifty thousand refugees, a bastard son, and an ex-fiancée who may have learned his darkest secret, Gavin has problems on every side. All magic in the world is running wild and threatens to destroy the Seven Satrapies.

Worst of all, the old gods are being reborn, and their army of color wights is unstoppable. The only salvation may be the brother whose freedom and life Gavin stole sixteen years ago.”

I’m going to skip my usual break down of writing, magic, world, ect… and just jump right into my thoughts. Since the build up of the world and magic were in the first book, and the writing has stayed the same.

I liked this one better than the first. You get to see a lot of the inner workings and politics of the Chromeria while Kip goes to school! Yep, there’s magic school in this book. I am a sucker for any book that has a type of magical school. What a nerd. Plus it’s hilarious to watch Kip go head to head with Andross (his grandfather). But then less hilarious later on…

Gavin and Karris’ chemistry is off the charts. That’s all I’ll say about that! Ha!

I love that we are starting to dig deeper into each character and watching this crazy world unfold. I half like and half don’t like Liv’s POV. She’s lawful evil. But I find it interesting her reasoning she uses for being bad (Although she thinks she’s the good guy).

Honeslty, Kip is my favorite POV. He’s really funny and smart. I found myself hoping the next chapter would always be his. I’m loving watching the characters get stronger (or weaker) in their magic and in their ways.

Oh yeah, Iron Fist is still my favorite!!! Listen here, Weeks, I will revolt and throw tomatoes at you if you kill him ever! Also, that cliff hanger!!!!

Has anyone read this series?! Please someone talk with me about it if you have! I have so many theories!!

The Black Prism (Lightbringer, #1) Review [Spoiler Free]

“Gavin Guile is the Prism, the most powerful man in the world. He is high priest and emperor, a man whose power, wit, and charm are all that preserves a tenuous peace. Yet Prisms never last, and Gavin Guile knows exactly how long he has left to live.

When Gavin Guile discovers he has a son, born in a far kingdom after the war that put him in power, he must decide how much he’s willing to pay to protect a secret that could tear his world apart.”

First Thoughts. Pretty awesome actually. So this book came HIGHLY recommended by my husband who went 27 years without reading. This is his first year where he actually wanted to read books. I was shocked! But I dutifully started this fantasy series that he so loves. And y’all, I am so glad I did! It’s been since 2014, I think, that I have read an adult fantasy. Horrible since it’s my favorite genre. IT WAS SO GOOD! What a breath of fresh air! I had so much readers anxiety during this adventure. I had so many burning questions and theories! Some were answered and some have still not been and it’s driving me nuts.

Plot/ Story. A pretty fast paced story for a first book. There was a lot of traveling, a lot of action, and a lot of intrigue! Plus learning about the Color System of magic was SO COOL!! What a neat concept! Depending on what color you can draft, you can make different things and the color can change your mood. The downside is, the more you draft, the quicker you die. Most only live to be 36-40. Only the Prism can draft all of the colors and has to keep a balance in the world.

Characters. To start, I ship Gavin and Karris so hard!!! Please just be happy together! Anyways, Kip is adorable and witty and charming. He is Gavin’s overweight son that may or not be more powerful? I don’t know yet! I really like the different POV the book takes you through. Karris is one of my favorites because she’s super feisty and great fun to read about.  My favorite character though is hands down Iron Fist!!!! He’s one of the coolest characters I’ve ever read about! He’s go secrets, he’s powerful, and he’s got that upstanding honor thing going without being boring.

Final Thoughts. I highly recommend. It’s SO much fun to read and the writing is phenomenal. I don’t understand how I’ve never heard of this book before my husband told me about it. I feel like this series has a following, just no one I know! I’ve already wasted no time to start book 2!
