Memory makes reality.

That’s what New York City cop Barry Sutton is learning as he investigates the devastating phenomenon the media has dubbed False Memory Syndrome—a mysterious affliction that drives its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived.

That’s what neuroscientist Helena Smith believes. It’s why she’s dedicated her life to creating a technology that will let us preserve our most precious memories. If she succeeds, anyone will be able to re-experience a first kiss, the birth of a child, the final moment with a dying parent.

As Barry searches for the truth, he comes face-to-face with an opponent more terrifying than any disease—a force that attacks not just our minds but the very fabric of the past. And as its effects begin to unmake the world as we know it, only he and Helena, working together, will stand a chance at defeating it.

But how can they make a stand when reality itself is shifting and crumbling all around them?”

This was my first Blake Crouch book and I completely understand the hype. It’s been a really long time since I’ve read a Fiction book that has challenged my mind. I truly believe that what happened in this book would never happen in real life, but it was really scary to think about!

Characters. There was a good mix of a scientific mind, Helena, and a mind that solves puzzles, Barry, who is a detective. Their minds meshed and worked so well together! Helena is one-minded and married to her work. Barry, I think just wants love and purpose. In the beginning I found Barry to be more exciting to read about. Helena’s chapters were really, really scientific and some of it went over my head. But I didn’t mind, because I found it fascinating to find out what happens to your brain when you die. But towards the end, Helena had the more interesting interactions.

Plot. Crouch is like a mastermind or something. I am usually pretty good at guessing where a book is going to go but he takes you to different places. I could not guess what was going to happen. I can’t even talk about it because of spoilers! But the way he melded the past, present, and future together with memories was amazing. What would happen if you could remember something that never happened to you? Or if you remembered your own death? What would the repercussions be if millions of people had these false memories? Also, THAT ENDING THOUGH, WHAT?! I HAVE QUESTIONS.

Writing. I understand why people like Crouch so much. His writing is precise, witty, and very smart. He writes a good balance of character development and highly intriguing plot. I am officially a fan!

Final Thoughts. I want to read all of his books right now. My husband and I watched Wayward Pines before it got cancelled and loved it. I would also highly recommend this book to anyone who likes the movie Inception…

Have you read any of Blake Crouch books? If so, what do you recommend?

October Wrap-Up

Wreath

I did pretty darn well with reading. I didn’t finish all of the ARCs I wanted to but I read a total of SEVEN (!!!!) books. That’s actually a monthly record for me. Thank you audio books. 😛

35430Path of Destruction (Star Wars: Darth Bane #1) by Drew Karpyshyn

My first Star Wars extended universe read and I could’t be happier! It’s about Darth Bane (1000 years before Luke Skywalker) and his descent into the dark side and becoming one of the most powerful Dark Lords who ever lived.

For a Muse of Fire (For a Muse of Fire #1) by Heidi Heilig

I absolutely loved this book. Jetta is bi-polar, can control spirits, and she kicks butt. I loved the mash up between French and Asian cultures. Plus the book was put together in a unique way; Acts (as in Plays), first person narrative, music, and short stories.

Voyager (Outlander #3) by Diana Gabaldon

This one was my favorite! It was so sweet and full of adventure! My only complaint is that I don’t understand why there has to be a rape in every single book so far. Stahp.

Madilla: The Spirit of U’Katang by Ian B. Boyd

This was a cute, sweet story. Written by a self-published author, this book is about a little girl in a remote village that can “see” through sparrows. She uses her piano playing as a guide. This was different than what I usually read but I liked it.

Courting Darkness (Courting Darkness Duology #1) by Robin LaFevers

This was my first book in LaFevers Assassin world. I loved reading about Sybella and Beast. I did not like Genevieve. I really liked the world and how depending on what “god” you served, you got different powers. I liked it enough to want to read the first trilogy. This comes out in February of 2019!

An amazing finish to and amazing series! I’m very happy with how everything ended. I’m sad to let this world go! I’m obsessed with this series and obsessed with Jay Kristoff. He’s been one of my favorite authors since Stormdancer came out!

September 2018 Wrap-Up

Another great reading month! I read 4 1/2 books!

38490718First Lessons

My Rating: 2 Stars

First Lessons was interesting, but only if it was half a book. It’s a bout a woman who dies and wakes up in another women’s body AND in another world AND in medieval times! It was very interesting to see how the main character invented things to make her world more modern. But that was literally the whole book. My full review is HERE.

My Rating: 3 Stars

This one was so cute!! A perfect, light, sci-fi romance! I read this one in a day. I thought it was a unique take on how to fix a failing colony on a planet in the middle of nowhere space! I am on a blog tour for this on October 12! So look out for my full review then!

My Rating: 3.5 Stars

This one was super interesting! I liked the writing, the story, and the magic. I didn’t like the character chemistry. They seemed like they didn’t like each other. And it got annoying how angsty they were. You can find my review HERE.

So these next two books I am going to call honorable mentions. I finally, FINALLY finished Voyager. It’s taken me six months on audioble because my son repeats things and talks. I was afraid to listen to it in the car. He already says things that I have no idea where he gets them from.  He’s two and a half. The next one is the one I am calling my half. And that is For A Muse of Fire. I am so close to being done! It’s so good!!

What did you read this month?

The 48 by Donna Hosie

My Rating: 3 Stars

The first book I read was about time traveling, teen, assassins. It was likable but didn’t love it. The writing was okay, the story was great, the characters were okay. The story was what really held my attention. My full review is HERE.

Nine While Nine by Stasia Morineaux

My Rating: 3.5 Stars

Another one I have yet to write a full review for! Look out for that in the next few days! This was a difficult rating for me. I really enjoyed the plot and characters, but not the writing style. It was a bit too jumpy for me and I was confused a lot of the time. But this one is still on my mind, so I liked it, if that makes sense!
